2022-2027 Bond Project: South Zarzamora Street Overpass at Union Pacific Railroad

In 2023, a South Zarzamora Overpass Aesthetic Package Survey was conducted with more than 200 respondents. For more info, visit SASpeakUp.com/OverpassSurvey.

Scope of Project: The proposed project will reconstruct South Zarzamora Street to include a proposed bridge structure over South Zarzamora Street, Frio City Road, and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) intersection. The project will include drainage improvements, signalized intersection upgrades, pedestrian improvements, utility adjustments, right-of-way acquisitions, and other improvements as needed. This project was selected in the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Call-for-Projects and will receive TxDOT funding.

Alcance del Proyecto: El proyecto propuesto reconstruirá South Zarzamora Street para incluir una estructura de puente propuesta sobre South Zarzamora Street, Frio City Road y la intersección de Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). Este proyecto incluirá mejoras de desagüe, actualizaciones en intersecciones señalizadas, mejoras peatonales, ajustes de servicios públicos, adquisiciones de derecho de paso, y otras mejoras según sea necesario. The Bond Project will facilitate construction of a railroad overpass on South Zarzamora within available funding.  This is a multi-phased project.

What you need to know:

Starting as early as Friday, November 7, 2025, thru January, 2026, Big Tex Contractors will begin demolition work on South Zarzamora from Walton Ave. to Taft Blvd. This work is associated with the South Zarzamora Overpass Bond Project.

Demolition scope of work includes:

 

  • The demolition of vacant residential and commercial buildings.
  • Contractor will be working Monday thru Saturday 8am to 6pm.
  • To facilitate traffic, all travel lanes will be open.
  • Fencing will be placed all around the demolition premises for safety and security purposes.
  • Heavy equipment and dumpsters will be placed on the properties scheduled for demolition.
