Phase 1 – Lexington to St. Mary’s (September – December)

Phase 2 – Houston to Martin (December – March 2027)

Phase 3 – Martin to St. Mary’s (March 2027-August 2027)

What Is Happening? Critical infrastructure improvements are underway along the San Antonio River Walk from Houston St. to Lexington Ave. The project scope includes repair and replacement of uneven sidewalk panels, restoration of stairs and landings, reconstruction of retaining walls and handrails and ADA accessibility upgrades. To ensure public safety during this project, the West Bank walkway between St. Mary’s St. and Lexington Ave will be temporarily closed during the first phase the of the project. This project is coordinated by the City of San Antonio Capital Delivery and Downtown Operations departments.

Sidewalks project scope: Houston to Pecan St. and Pecan St. to Augusta St.- Repair or replace unlevel sidewalk panels. Restore small stairs and landings. Assess and upgrade to ADA standards. Augusta to N. St. Mary's St. - West bank walkway will require total demolition and reconstruction to a level condition. Assess and upgrade any condition in this area to ADA standards.  N. St. Mary's to Lexington St. - Repair or replace unlevel sidewalk panels. Restore small stairs and landings. Assess and upgrade to ADA standards.

Staircase Scope: Inspection and assessment by a licensed structural engineer to determine fundamental integrity of the entire staircase. Total replacement of handrails to address accessibility requirements. Restoration of stair treads to mitigate concrete and metal spalling. Painting of all metal surfaces.

Phase 1 – Lexington to St. Mary’s (September – December 2026)

Pedestrian Impact & Access
West Bank: Completely closed to all pedestrian traffic between St. Mary’s St. and Lexington Ave.
East Bank: Remains fully open and accessible. Pedestrians can use the East Bank walks to bypass the construction zone.
Business Access: All local businesses, offices, and residential properties remain accessible through street level.
