Application
Background
The work of the Removing Barriers to Affordable Housing Development Subcommittee (RBSC) began in 2019 to focus on reducing cost burden, removing barriers to ADU development, and other policies related to affordable housing. The work was paused in 2020 due to the pandemic but is resuming in 2021. The subcommittee has since focused on proposing amendments to the UDC to remove regulatory barriers to affordable housing.
This group was originally established as a technical working group to remove barriers to the production and preservation of affordable housing as recommended by the Mayor’s Housing Policy Framework. The group became a subcommittee of the Housing Commission in October 2021.
Charge and Goal
The RBSC is charged with recommending improvements to the Unified Development Code and other City processes to facilitate more affordable housing development in San Antonio. The subcommittee will offer recommendations and advise the Housing Commission on the following goal:
- Recommend improvements to the UDC and other City processes to facilitate more affordable housing development.
Eligibility and Selection
The Housing Commission is recruiting a maximum of 7 members. The Commission is seeking applicants with broad work experiences as well as content and technical expertise to fill these positions. The Commission is prioritizing knowledge, experience, or skill sets in at least one of the following categories:
- Community & neighborhood advocacy (with knowledge of the local affordable housing need)
- Architecture, especially for affordable housing
- Accessibility, visitability, and universal design
- Housing development finance ( for affordable housing)
- Small infill development (for affordable housing)
- Civil engineering experience (working with public utilities)
Requirements
- Live in the city of San Antonio
Commitment
If selected as a committee member, you will be asked to:
- Attend committee meetings as determined by the committee.
- Serve a two or three-year term. Terms will be staggered and begin upon the adoption of the 2022 UDC amendments. Information on this timeline can be found on the Development Services Department website.
- Work to advance the goals of RBSC
Process
Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by members of the Commission and City staff. If additional information is needed, you will be contacted by City staff. Appointments will be made as soon as November 16, 2022.
