Zona Cultural Streets Project Update

Road Closure - Santa Rosa (Cesar Chavez to Dolorosa) and Nueva Intersection

Beginning on Monday, March 18, 2024, the southbound lanes of Santa Rosa (from Dolorosa to Cesar Chavez) will be closed for utility and subsequent road construction. This is in addition to the current closure of northbound traffic between Dolorosa and Cesar Chavez, which will constitute a full roadway closure of Santa Rosa. This closure will include the Santa Rosa and Nueva intersection.  All lanes of Santa Rosa (from Dolorosa and Cesar Chavez) are scheduled to reopen this Summer.

San Saba, between Nueva and Dolorosa will not be accessible during Fiesta 2024 Events. (April 17, 2024 thru April 28, 2024)   

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. All nearby businesses and facilities remain accessible, including the Public Safety Headquarters and Federal Building. Traffic impacts will be minimized as much as possible, however please plan for some delays and travel carefully through the work zone. Due to weather or unforeseen conditions the closure date may be extended. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience as construction progresses. Public Works will continue to communicate any changes as the project progresses.

Project Notes:

Contractor (Sundt Construction) continues reconstruction work on the Zona Cultural Streets project. The project consists of three 2017 Bond Projects, including Commerce Street (Frio Street to Santa Rosa Street), San Saba Street (Nueva Street to Martin Street) and Santa Rosa Street (Cesar Chavez Boulevard to Martin Street). The Project consists of utility upgrades, roadway reconstruction, traffic and pedestrian signal upgrades, new street lighting, sidewalk widening along with streetscape and landscape improvements, new bus shelters and pedestrian amenities including lighting in accordance with Zona Cultural themes and materials. Summarized below are the various street closures with maps, and projected work efforts to date. 

 

Current and Planned Work: Commerce (Frio to Santa Rosa)

  • January 2022 thru Mid-July 2024: Commerce Street (Pecos to Frio) – Irrigation, landscaping, and signage. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic. Two lanes of westbound Traffic have been established on 4.15.2024.
  • April 2022 thru May 2024: Commerce Street (San Saba to Pecos South Side) - Irrigation, landscaping, illumination, and signage. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.
  • April 2022 thru Mid-April 2024: Commerce Street & Pecos Intersection – Pavers, illumination, and signalization. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic. Two lanes of southbound traffic on Pecos thru Commerce on April 12, 2024.
  • September 2022 thru June 2024: Commerce Street (Santa Rosa to San Saba South Side) – Irrigation, landscaping, illumination, and pavers. At least one lane of traffic (westbound) will be maintained at all times, provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.

 

Current and Planned Work: San Saba (Nueva to Martin)

  • January 2022 thru May 2024: San Saba (Nueva to Dolorosa) – Pavement at San Saba & Dolorosa Intersection work continues, provisions for pedestrian traffic will be maintained at all times.
  • May 6, 2024 thru July 2024: San Saba Full Road Closure (Dolorosa to Commerce) – Completion of Storm drain, roadway, landscape, signage and illumination. Provisions will be in place to account for pedestrian traffic.  

 

Current and Planned Work: Santa Rosa (Cesar Chavez to Martin)

  • March 18, 2024 through July 2024: Santa Rosa (Cesar Chavez to Dolorosa) and Nueva Intersection: The contractor has closed the westside (southbound lanes) of Santa Rosa from the Cesar Chavez intersection to the Dolorosa intersection. This is in addition to the current closure of the eastside (northbound) between Cesar Chavez and Dolorosa, which will constitute a full roadway closure of Santa Rosa between Cesar Chavez and Nueva. This closure will include east side of the Santa Rosa & Nueva intersection for reconstruction work. Temporarily northbound Santa Rosa traffic at Nueva will be permitted to Dolorosa. Access to Public Safety Headquarters, Bill Millers, Federal Building, and Washington Square building shall be provided at all times.
  • November 2023 thru Mid-April, 2024: Santa Rosa (Commerce to Houston) - Northbound curb lane closed for installation of SAWS Water and CPS gas.
  • May 2024 thru December 2024: Santa Rosa (Dolorosa to Houston) – Completion of SAWS Water & Sanitary Sewer, CPS Electric, Illumination and Signalization installation, subsequent reconstruction operations and paver installations. Provisions will be in place to account access to businesses and pedestrian traffic.
