2024 ICC Building-Related Codes Updates
2024 ICC Building-Related Codes Updates
The City Council adopted the 2024 International Code Council Codes in January and will become effective May 1, 2025.
The City of San Antonio prioritizes adopting the most recent building codes to meet the latest safety standards. These codes are updated every three years, and the Development Services Department (DSD) leads the process to ensure that our adopted building-related codes align with national safety standards, the latest industry practices, and state laws. We are now ready to begin meetings with committee members and stakeholders to review and propose changes to the current codes.
As we begin this process, there are some changes to the committees recently approved by the City Council to add transparency and inclusivity to this process:
The roles of non-board members appointed to the Building-Related and Fire Codes Appeals and Advisory (BRFCAAB) have been expanded to include voting and
Non-board members will count toward a quorum
- Committees will comprise 4 to 7 members with alternates plus the addition of 4 non-appointed members OR one less than the number of board members
To provide a better understanding of the adoption process, we have scheduled a series of committee meetings in the upcoming months. Each committee will review the 2024 International Code Council (ICC) codes for the following:
Building Code
Existing Building Code
Residential Code
Fire Code
Mechanical Code
Plumbing Code
Fuel Gas Code
National Electrical Code (2023 NFPA 70)
Swimming Pool and Spa Code
