August 22, 2024 Community Meeting:

In 2023, Councilmember Sukh Kaur (District 1) and Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez (District 2) initiated a request for staff to work with the community to create a new cultural heritage district celebrating the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community in San Antonio.
Located largely along the North Main Avenue corridor between San Antonio College and Tobin Hill, the district represents a focal point for the LGBTQIA+ community. The commercial corridor is home to numerous LGBTQIA+-owned and -oriented businesses and hosts the annual “Pride Bigger than Texas” Festival and Parade, a celebration of identity, belonging, and activism. Recognition of the area’s cultural significance increased in 2018 with the installation of the city’s first Rainbow Crosswalk, a symbol of acceptance and celebration.
The Office of Historic Preservation will host community listening sessions, inviting residents to share their knowledge and stories about the places and traditions related to the Cultural Heritage District.
